The Commission is established under the Elections Act of 1984 and is charged with ensuring that elections are conducted under the Constitution and the laws of the land.
The National Electoral Commission is headed by a Chairman who is appointed by the President of Tanzania. The Chairman is assisted by three Deputy Chairmen and six Commissioners who are also appointed by the President. The Commission has a Secretariat that provides administrative support to its activities.
